The Mazda MPV was introduced in 1999 as an alternative to the many mainstream models available. The new MPV has a number of significant changes, mostly under the skin, that improve its functionality and driving dynamics, the most significant being the introduction of a new MZR-CD (Mazda Responsive Engine) 136 PS common rail diesel engine.

With an entry price of £18,495 and a high standard specification list the Mazda MPV is an attractive and competitive proposition in the people carrier market.

Externally the 2002-model MPV is identifiable by its restyled and fuller bumpers, its new headlamps, the prominent new Mazda five-pointed arrowhead grille and its new style alloy wheels.

Changes have been made on the inside as well, the refined dark grey of the sports upholstery harmonises with the carbon fibre-look instrument panel and access to the third row of seats has been made easier by removing the need to take off the head-rests before folding the second row seats forward.

The most significant changes are to be found under the bonnet, the previous 2.0 litre petrol engine has been replaced by a new MZR 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine producing 141 PS which is delivered with refinement that belies its spirited on-road performance.

Joining the 2.3-litre petrol engine is a new MZR-CD 2.0-litre common-rail diesel engine that produces a useful 136 hp with 310 Nm of torque to offer an engine that gives a relaxed drive with plenty of power on tap when required.

Chassis improvements also distinguish the new MPV from its predecessor: suspension modifications, more powerful brakes and an even stiffer body cater for the more powerful engines and at the same time ensure greater primary safety.

The new Mazda MPV carries over a number of its best features, it still has one of the largest interiors in its class, the practical twin sliding doors allow easy entry and exit even in narrow parking bays and it retains its seat versatility.

With all the seats fitted the MPV will carry seven adults with ease, the five seats from the second and third row can be removed easily to provide an immense 2,745 litres of carrying capacity.

Driver and passengers get generous head and legroom and there are plenty of oddment storage locations ideal for sunglasses, drink bottles or even toys.

The new MPV boasts a class leading standard specification list: four airbags, ABS with Electronic Brake-force distribution, air-conditioning with independent front and rear controls, a height-adjustable steering wheel and roof rails are standard equipment, as are electric windows front and rear, electrically-adjustable and heated wing mirrors and remote central locking, electric glass sunroof, modular audio with single CD, alloy wheels and front fog lamps.
