NEW GENERATION SPACE STARS

The second generation of Space Stars will go on sale from July 1st. I had a
brief try at the industry testing ground at Millbrook and was impressed, but
back to the new car first. The revised car has much more of a sports feel to
it, yet prices remain starting from £9,995.
Three engines are now available and these include a turbo diesel 1.9 with a
top speed of 115mph with a combined fuel economy figure of 51.4mpg. The 1.6
SOHC MPI petrol engine produces 97bhp with a 39.2mpg combined mode consumption
figure and top speed of 112mph. The 1.3 produces 81bhp with a combined fuel
consumption figure of 41.5mpg and a top speed of 106mph.
Inside new upholstery and colour schemes have been designed for all models,
with a flush style centre console and a new four spoke steering wheel common
across the range. A new armrest for the driver and reworked armrest including
cup holders for rear passengers add to the features.
Loading is aided by the large hatchback door, low floor height and low load
sill. The double action rear seats can be folded to create a maximum area of
1370 litres or 40 cubic feet.
I drove the 1.9 TD Mirage and found it to be a very responsive and bright engine
and it dealt well with the steep gradients and tight turns of the test circuit.
When they become available I will let you know what it is like to live with
one.
