Porsche Boxster
Highlights of the Redesigned Boxster Series
Introduced in 1996 the Boxster has undergone continuous development and the new 2003 model which will be available from August confirms that this is a true classic.
The Boxsters 2.7-litre power unit now develops maximum output of 168
kW (228 bhp) at 6300 rpm, the 3.2-litre engine of the Boxster S boosting maximum
output to 191 kW (260 bhp) at 6200 rpm.
Both cars also offer even better acceleration from 0-100 km/h, the Boxster (6.4
seconds) and the Boxster S (5.7 seconds) each reducing their sprint time by
two-tenths of a second. Despite this improved performance, fuel consumption
is once again about 2 per cent better, that is lower than before.
This is attributable to the new VarioCam technology increasing engine output and reducing both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions at the same time on both Boxster models: VarioCam provides infinite adjustment of the camshaft up to an angle of 40 degrees, thus reducing any losses in the cylinder charge cycle to an absolute minimum.
The 17-inch light-alloy wheels newly developed especially for the Boxster and the 18-inch light-alloy wheels presented for the first time on the 911 Carrera serve to significantly reduce unsprung masses and, as a result, ensure a very smooth and sensitive response of the springs and dampers. In their design, the wheels consistently follow the principles of lightweight construction borne out in particular by the very narrow spokes. Compared with the former wheels, the new 17-inch wheels are two kilos lighter. The 18-inch wheels available on both Boxster models, in turn, weigh 10.8 kilos less, equal to a reduction in weight by 22.1 per cent.
The roof now drops at a steeper angle to the rear lid, offering a contour line very similar to the aluminium hardtop available as an option. This new shape is provided by an additional, fourth roof bracket above the new rear window now made of glass. Replacing the former plastic window on both Boxster models, this new glass window naturally comes with electric heating not only improving visibility to the rear, but also enhancing motoring comfort in cold and wet weather. The soft roof nevertheless closes just as quickly and smoothly as before despite the new glass rear window, a new kinematic roof structure keeping the entire period required for opening and closing to a remarkable 12 seconds.
Prices will remain unchanged from £31,450 and £38,150 for the Boxster and Boxster S respectively.
